The first video i had watched was the story of bottled water. I was seriously surprised in how much bottled water can harm the environment. I had no idea that businesses were using the technique called "Manufactured Demand" as their basis into conning consumers like you and me to buy their bottled water that is supposed to have come from "mountain springs" where instead they are actually just filtered water. Also the production costs and transportation costs to the environment and also the fuel used could power 1million cars? Like seriously this is a problem! This video really gave me in insight into what businesses are trying to do and i am happy that i watched it.
The second video was the story of electronics. Most electronics now are "Designed for the dump" its horrible! What anne has said that every house has at least one pile of random cables and chargers is so true! I can't agree more! And this is because of all the business designing for the dump. Once the product life ends, they are usually not recycled or if anything, sent to china and for them to retrieve the very little amount of minerals that can be reused then burn up the rest, at the risk of the people in china wearing no protective gear. I do agree with the "take back" laws where businesses will take back their old technology and reuse them to redesign the old products into something more long lasting and easier to recycle.

Video Reflections: Giving Packaging a New Life
Sustainable design allows for the reduction of the negative effects that designers can have on the environment and which benefits the most in society and also the economics.
Sustainability has always been a high priority for designers, as earth has limited materials and we need to make the most of it. These videos enlighten us about the process in which products can become reused and changed into new and different products.
What enlightened me in these videos was that, technology now is quite advanced now that even recycled products can now be just as good as the original, if not better.

Task 1 - Ecological Footprint

Not too sure how to save it as a PDF but i do have the link to the quiz. I must say, i didn't think this quiz would be that indepth... It really filters down to what you really do at home and how much you recycle. My result was 7.53 earths, and i've been told this figure is quite the average which is probably good in my part. Although as a designer i probably should be looking towards a renewable lifestyle so that my design reflects what i do.

So i'm back with the start of 2011, with two days of uni it can't really be better! However my thursday starts from 9am and finishes at 8pm with no breaks so that one is a tad tough... but none the less lets see how this year goes as im in my third year.

Designing Dream Machines by Richard Burkes
As this video is pretty long, i will provide an overview of the whole video. British designers, Dick Powell and Richard Seymour try to find the factor which marks their product out from all the competition. It follows them as they work on three new designs, such as the Skorpion motorcycle (a classic design), which was specifically made for indians, The MuZ for East German company and the cordless kettle which has the brief of making kitchen applicances having a 'futuristic' feel to it. The video explains many things including brainstorming, researching, proposual, solution investigation, prototyping and most importantly evaluation of the project.

Rationale: Project Two - Postal Presents
This design brief was to design a flat packed object to fit to a C4 envelope flat, and that would be transformed into a useful 3D object as a gift. It would be sent via mail and we were encouraged to use sheet material.
I had started off with a collage of various holders, mainly book holders, to see what already made designs are out there, which failed and which succeeded. It gave me many ideas but not many that could be folded together with.
After many failed ideas, i chose the design which was easy and simple to make, whilst still have the functions of a cook book/magazine holder. The below is the final product where it is made from 3 A4 polypropylene sheets, so it ships perfectly flat in the C4 envelopes.

Overall i think the design was good, although the material could have been thought more thoroughly as it is a bit flimsy for some books.
